What solicitors charge for a lasting power of attorney in 2026
We checked 113 solicitor firms in England and Wales. Only 31 (27%) publish what they charge for a lasting power of attorney (LPA). Where firms do publish a price, one LPA costs a median £540 and a couple making both types pays £1,375.
The findings at a glance
- 73%of the solicitor firms we checked don’t publish a current LPA price (82 of 113)
- £540median price for one LPA
- £900median price for both types of LPA
- £900 to £2,400what a couple is quoted for the same four LPAs
- 23 of 50firm websites that state the government fee quote an out-of-date amount, 16 of them on a current LPA or fees page
Prices include VAT and don’t include the £92 government fee to register each LPA, which everyone pays whoever makes it.
What solicitors charge
Across the 42 firms that publish prices, most charge between £495 and £687 for one LPA. A couple making both types each usually pays between £1,200 and £1,740, but published prices for the same four documents run from £900 to £2,400.

“Lowest to highest” uses only prices the firms state themselves. One firm charges £725 plus VAT for each LPA, which would be £3,480 for a couple, but says it can quote less for more than one.
Most firms don’t publish a price
Only 31 of the 113 firms we checked show a current LPA price on their website. Another 6 show prices only in old articles or offers that have ended, and 76 give no price at all. Most ask you to phone or fill in a form for a quote, which makes comparing firms slow.
Where you live makes a difference. In the North East, more than half the firms we checked publish a price. In the East of England, none did.
Each region has 9 to 18 firms, so treat small differences with care.
Some still quote the wrong government fee
The fee to register an LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian rose from £82 to £92 in November 2025. Of the 50 firm websites that state the fee, 23 still give an old amount, usually £82 and sometimes £110. 16 of them do so on the firm’s current LPA or fees page; the rest are in older articles or price lists. It’s a small difference, but it shows how rarely some pages are updated.
The cost of leaving it too late
An LPA can only be made while you can still understand what you’re signing. If you lose that ability without one, your family usually has to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your deputy. That takes months: in 2025, a property and financial affairs deputyship took an average of 24 weeks from application to court order, according to the Ministry of Justice. Nobody can act for you in the meantime.
Four firms in our survey publish what they charge to make a deputyship application:
| Where the firm is | Solicitor’s fee for a deputyship application, VAT included |
|---|---|
| Newcastle | £1,140 |
| Sunderland | £1,800 to £2,400 |
| Sunderland | £2,400 |
| London | £2,400 to £3,000 |
On top of the solicitor’s fee, the court charges £432 to apply and the Office of the Public Guardian charges £100 once a deputy is appointed, so £532 before any supervision. Then there’s a supervision fee every year, usually £320. By comparison, registering both types of LPA costs £184. What happens if you don’t have an LPA
How we did the survey
- In October 2026 we checked the websites of 113 firms regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, in 20 towns and cities across all nine English regions and Wales.
- In each place we took firms in order from web searches for LPA, power of attorney and wills solicitors. The searches didn’t mention prices, so firms that publish prices weren’t favoured. We took up to 10 firms per place and left out will writers and online services.
- On 26 October 2026 we re-read the website of every firm without a current price, page by page, including price lists. We found no prices we’d missed, and took out 2 firms whose websites don’t offer LPAs.
- The prices come from 42 firms: the 31 in the survey that publish a price, plus 11 more we found by searching for published prices. Those 11 aren’t counted in the 27% figure. Firms that publish prices may charge less than those that don’t, so the typical price may be higher than shown here.
- Prices include VAT and exclude the £92 registration fee. Where a firm gives only a price per LPA, we worked out the total for two or four. “From” prices and minimums are counted as stated.
- We don’t name firms. Prices change, and we’ll update this page each year.

Where yourLPA fits
yourLPA costs £95 for one LPA, £165 for both types or £295 for a couple, with printing and posting included and no VAT to add. Steve Ryan checks every answer before your LPA is printed.
